Church of Christ

God himself has laid the foundation on which the church of Christ is built . His own words are , " Behold , I lay in Zion for a foundation a stone , a tried stone , a precious corner - stone , a sure foundation . " This foundation is his dear Son .No other foundation was sufficiently strong or stable to bear the weight of the church . According to the eternal purposes of infinite grace , wisdom and truth , a glorious building was to be erected , in which God himself should dwell ; a holy temple , which should shine through all ages , illuminated with the glory of God . The apostle , therefore , addressing himself to the saints of God at Ephesus , says : "Now therefore ye are no more strangers and foreigners , but fellow citizens with the saints , and of the household of God ; and are built upon the foundation of the apostles and the prophets , Jesus Christ himself being the chief corner stone ; in whom all the building fitly framed together groweth unto an holy temple of the Lord ; in whom ye also are builded together for an habitation of God through the Spirit .  He therefore specially urges this point upon the Corinthians as involving the necessity of separation from all idolatry ; " And what agreement hath the temple of God with idols ? for ye are the temple of the living God ; as God hath said , I will dwell in them , and walk in them , and they shall be my people ." This temple or heavenly building consists of elect saints , a multitude which no man can number , gathered from all quaters , and yet compacted by the wisdom and skill of the divine Architect  together , so as to form one glorious , harmonious temple .
