And he died." Genesis 5

And he  died ." Genesis 5 This chapter celebrates the victories of DEATH. The conqueror unfolds his banner over a prostrate world. The chieftains of the elder age pass in review. DEATH meets them. They bow before him. Except Enoch, they all fall slain. DEATH plies his sting, and they cannot escape. Reader! seek profit from this deathful page. The same destroyer still has like power. He tracks your steps. His eye rests on you. His dart is poised. He soon will overtake. His chilly hand will bear you away. Your life will cease. You will be numbered with the dead. The grave will cover you. You will moulder in the dust. The worms will have their food. Others will take your place. Your name will fade. The sun will rise, as before. Nature will still put on her blithesome robe. The birds will sing. The earth will bear her fruits. Man will go forth to toil—to pleasure and to sin. Your absence will make no lasting void. All will go on, as though you had never lived. Come, then, and be...

Sanctification

You desire sanctification ,- You pant to be conformed to the image of Christ .  This is well ; for it is an eternal law of God , that without holiness no man shall see His face . But holiness can be learned only at this altar . It is a sight of a dying Jesus ,which kills lust . It is the shadow of the cross, which causes evil to wither .  A lover of iniquity cannot dwell on this hallowed ground . But there never was a holy man , who did not live glorying in the "more excellent sacrifice. " If ever you would walk with God in true righteousness , you must not be Cain like , but reject it . But ,remember , this sacrifice is only one . Jesus by the one offering of Himself , once made , "hath perfected forever them that are sanctified ."Pass it by ,and you will find none else . Pass it by today , and you may seek it in vain tomorrow . Hear then , the voice of Abel , which calls you without delay to hasten to the one altar of salvation . Remember these humble lines , unti...

"Praise ye the Lord"

Psalm 117v2.         The merciful kindness of the Lord is a boundless theme . We see it inscribed on all the works of creation . We see it shining in the glories of redemption . What could have been done more for his people that the Lord hath not done for us ? The great God , evenjesus , is our full salvation . Their is pardon in his precious blood for every sin . There is a covering robe in his righteousness for every transgression . There is sanctification and renewal in his Spirit for our cold hearts . The cup of grace , of mercy , and of love verily overflows . It could scarcely hold another drop . The promises of the covenant are all yea and amen in Christ . Could God give more ? Let , then , our grateful cry ever swell . Praise ye the Lord.

The Psalms (3)

The Psalms traverses every condition of man . It roams with the shepherd in the meadows . It sits with the mighty monarch on the throne . It flees with the fugitive on the hills , and hides with him in the caves . It leads the conquering host to victory . It walks with the busy in the crowded haunts, and leaves not the lonely in their solitide . It is a prop for the staggering steps  -  a guide for the wanderer  -  a counsellor when perplexities bewilder  -  a pillow for the weary head , a sympathising hand to wipe the weeping eye , a voice to whisper comfort to the disconsolate . No words more cheer the dying saint . The soul in extremest agony for sin finds here a ready outlet for the bitterest streams of sorrow . Words are here supplied to crave deliverance from wrath . When interest in Christ is realised , and joy is in the height of rapture , here are the wings to bear aloft to heaven

The Psalms

The main glory of the book of Psalms is its identity with Christ . He brightly shines throughout its varied hymns . He is constantly the speaker , and in these breathings of his Spirit we receive convincing evidence that , without ceasing to be God , He was a perfect man , and pre-eminently a Man of Sorrows . We here are supplied with a vivid portrait of His character , His work , His love , His sufferings , His glory. It would be no difficult task to construct a Gospel from its prophetic language . It may be regarded as His manual during His career on earth . When , as the expiating God - man , He was uplifted on the accursed tree, and the iron entered into His soul , His misery goes forth in the moanings of a Psalm , " My God , My God , why hast thou forsaken me ?"  He gives up the ghost uttering its confiding terms , "Into Thy hands I commend my spirit ."  He ascends amid the shouts , "Lift up your heads , O ye gates !"  He receives the welcome , "...
